G. A. SANSING, E. B. LrLLEHOJ, R. W. DHROY and M. A. MILLER. Synergistic toxic effects of citrinin, ochratoxin A and penicillic acid in mice. Toxicoll 14, 213-220, 1976.-The LD50'S in mice of citrinin, ochratoxin A, and penicillic acid injected intraperitone,"lIy were 89,22, and 100 mg per kg of body weight, respectively. Paired combinations of the mycotoxins, citrinin: ochratoxin A (Cl:OA), ochratoxin A:penicillic acid (OA:PA), and penicillic acid:citrinin (PA :CI) elicited synergistic lethal responses. After administration of citrinin, 1"C-orotic acid incorporation into both liver and kidney increased significantly by 27 hI' with a return to control levels at 51 hI'. Treatment with penicillic acid also increased orotic acid incorporation into liver ribonucleic acid (RNA) at 27 hI' and at 4 hI' in the kidney. Ochratoxin A inhibited orotic acid incorporation into both liver and kidney RNA 6 hI' after toxin injection with a subsequent return to control levels at 27 hr. Orotic acid incorporation was inhibited in both kidney and liver 6 hI' after treatment with the toxin combination Cl :OA. PA :CI stimulated precursor incorporation into kidney RNA at 27 hI' and inhibited the function in liver. The OA :PA combination inhibited orotic acid incorporation in both organs 15-27 hI' after toxin treatment.

Mycotoxins: Producing Fungi and Mechanisms of Phytotoxicity

Mycotoxins are secondary fungal metabolites, toxic to humans, animals and plants. Among the hundreds of known mycotoxins, aflatoxins, citrinin, patulin, penicillic acid, tenuazonic acid, ochratoxin A, cytochalasins, deoxynivalenol, fumonisins, fusarin C, fusaric acid, and zearalenone are considered the types that most contaminate cereal grain. The majority of the mycotoxins in these groups are ...

Immunotoxicity of Penicillium Mycotoxins on Viability and Proliferation of Bovine Macrophage Cell Line (BOMACs)

Penicillium mycotoxins are natural contaminants found in grains, crops, fruits, and fermented products, especially during post harvest as well as storage periods. Contamination by individual and combinations of these toxins is likely to compromise food quality and safety. In this study, the potential immunotoxicity of citrinin (CIT), ochratoxin A (OTA), patulin (PAT), mycophenolic acid (MPA) an...

Cytotoxic Effect of Some Mycotoxins and their Combinations on Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells as Measured by the MTT Assay

The objective of this study was to assess cytotoxic effects of ochratoxin A (OTA), penicillic acid (PA), citrinin (CIT), fumonisin B1 (FB1) and their combinations (as naturally occur in real practice) on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBM) using a simple and cheap “in vitro” cytotoxicity test as MTT assay. A stronger suppression on metabolic activity of phytohaemagglutinin-p (PHA)-st...

Mycotoxic nephropathy in Bulgarian pigs and chickens: complex aetiology and similarity to Balkan endemic nephropathy.

Spontaneous nephropathy in Bulgaria, which is observed frequently during meat inspection and which differs morphologically from the classical description of mycotoxic porcine/chicken nephropathy as made in Denmark, was found to have a multi-mycotoxic aetiology being mainly provoked by a combined effect of ochratoxin A, penicillic acid and fumonisin B1 in addition to a not-yet-known metabolite. ...

DNA-attacking ability of carcinogenic mycotoxins in recombination-deficient mutant cells of Bacillus subtilis.

Thirty mycotoxins and 5 chemically modified toxins were tested for DNA-attacking ability in the rec assay using the recombination-deficient mutant of Bacillus subtilis M45 (rec-) and the parent strain H17 (rec+). Six Penicillium toxins (citrinin, penicillic acid, patulin, (-)-luteoskyrin, (+)-rugulosin, and PR-toxin), 5 Aspergillus toxins (aflatoxins B1 and G1, sterigmatocystin, O-acetylsterigm...
